Biography
Roland Billen has been Professor of Geomatics in the Department of Geography at the University of Liège since 2005. He began his research career in 1998 as a PhD candidate funded by the Belgian National Scientific Research Foundation (FNRS) and obtained his PhD in Geomatics from the University of Liège in 2002 for his work on 3D spatial relationships and 3D data structures.
He has held visiting researcher positions at the GIS Technology section of TU Delft (The Netherlands) and at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of L'Aquila (Italy). In January 2003, he was appointed Lecturer at the Department of Geographical and Earth Sciences at the University of Glasgow (Scotland-UK).
His research interests span various fields of geographic information science, including data acquisition techniques (surveying, laser scanning, photogrammetry), GIS and spatial database design, and qualitative spatial reasoning. He has been involved in numerous projects related to spatial database modeling and has initiated several research efforts in the field of 3D urban GIS. He currently leads the Geospatial Data Science and City Information Modeling Lab (GeoScITY), a research group specializing in spatial information modeling, with a strong focus on digital twins, particularly for urban applications across scales¿from territorial to building level¿while also addressing related topics such as digital heritage.
